A retired ambulance has found a new home after American Medical Response (AMR) generously donated the vehicle to the Lewis Career and Technical High School EMT program.

CTHS students will now have the opportunity to receive hands-on training utilizing the ambulance and participate in emergency simulations.

“Instead of us getting mannequins, we get to actually pull up on scene and engage in a simulation,” said, CTHS senior Justin Guelker, an aspiring EMT. “This really gives us a sense of the real deal.”

For years, AMR has donated multiple retired ambulances to fire, rescue and law enforcement agencies for various uses, in addition to various schools for training purposes.

“This is how you combine knowledge with reality,” Kevin Tipton, AMR regional director said. “It is different gaining skills in the classroom environment versus the back of a moving ambulance, but both experiences are essential for work in EMT.”

When Tipton handed over the keys to the ambulance, CTHS EMT teacher Melinda Medina said the vehicle will usher in a new learning experience outside the traditional educational experience.

“It’s an extension of my own classroom, but here on campus,” Medina said. “Before they get to do clinicals, they will get an idea of what an ambulance looks like and how to load a stretcher before getting out to work in the field.”
