Sam Rayburn High School graduates Axel Maldonado and Mario Barron were honored at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where they were recognized by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers’ Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program.

Maldonado received the National Scholastic Gold Medal and National American Vision Award and Barron placed as a National Scholastic Gold Medal recipient.

Their work was selected from approximately 340,000 national entries to represent Harris County for display at the Art.Write.Now. 2019 National Exhibition at the Pratt Art Institute.

The Scholastic Art and Writing program honors young artists and writers across the nation from grades 7-12 by giving teens the opportunity to exhibit and publish their work.

Guests speakers at the award reception included award-winning actress, Tina Fey, who opened the ceremony by sharing her journey as a creative artist and advising students as they continue on their different paths.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Students across America submitted nearly 340,000 original works this year in 29 different categories of art and writing.
