Ag students earn real-world experience at Pasadena LSRAPasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo

Pasadena ISD students throughout the district participated in the annual Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo Auction on September 26.

Community members from the chamber of commerce, local businesses and alumni organizations had the opportunity to bid on various items created by Pasadena ISD students and students of neighboring school districts.

During the auction, students sold art, floral arrangements, carpentry projects and various types of livestock. All items in the auction were created or raised by students.

When presenting livestock at the auction, students were responsible for all aspects of care for the animal including feeding, washing and training. Once the animals have been entered in the livestock show, only the top twelve in each species were eligible to participate in the auction. For the floral design and Ag. mechanics students, only the top six were eligible to participate.

Art students worked an average of 40-60 hours on their entries, then students submitted their artwork for campus level judging. Then judges outside of the district chose the top pieces that advanced to the next round of judging.

The following Pasadena ISD students sold the highest earning items at the auction:

• Julissa Rodriguez, Dobie High School, sold her sixth place steer for $8,500.
• Ashleigh Jackson, Sam Rayburn High School, sold the Reserve Champion Hog for $6,500.
• Kassandra Cantu, Sam Rayburn High School, sold the Grand Champion for School Art for $6,000.
• Brissa Ortiz, Dobie High School, sold the Grand Champion Turkey Tom for $5,000.
• Daniel Esquivel, Pasadena High School, sold the Grand Champion Turkey Hen for $5,000.

The funds that students raise from the auction can be used to purchase another animal or project materials for future shows and to pay for college or technical certifications.
