Pasadena ISD fourth-grade teacher Laura Rice received the VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for Houston area elementary level educators.

Rice was nominated for the award by the Madison Jobe Senior Center. She was selected as the winner for the Houston area by the local VFW Chapter based on her promotion of civic engagement.

For many years, Rice has partnered students in her classroom with seniors at Madison Jobe for a pen pal program. At the end of the year, a party is thrown and the students have the opportunity to meet their pen pals while taking part in craft projects and other festivities.

Rice will compete in the district level competition next. If selected as the winner, she will advance to the state competition and then nationals.
