PISD Communications It’s no secret that at Pasadena ISD, we take pride in the accomplishments of our students. With our CTE program expanding, PISD is highlighting some of the success stories from our very own CTE students.

Caoly Fabian, a graduate of Dobie’s Class of 2019, began a position as a PRN EKG Tech at Mainland Hospital, five months after graduating high school.

When the EKG program started in 2018 at Dobie, Fabian was determined to become a certified EKG Technician. Her tasks as a health science student, consisted of handling over 40 common arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), initiating responses to life threatening arrhythmias, recognizing signs and symptoms of a compromised patient and recording electrocardiograms and placing electrodes for patients in pediatrics, post mastectomy and amputees.

“She truly embodies what a healthcare professional should be. She is coachable and that made instructing her so effortless. You could tell she was determined,” said Health Science Practicum instructor Linu John.

Although no one knew what to expect for the EKG program during its first year, with the determination of students like Fabian, the program had a 92 percent passing rate at Dobie.

“It’s really important that our students know that there are fulfilling careers out there and they have a great opportunity with EKG Tech available to them. The decision that Caoly took will open so many more doors for her,” said John.

As an EKG Technician, Fabian performs EKG’s for patients with chest pains, heart problems or patients going in and out of surgery. Fabian also performs stress tests where she ensures patients have a comfortable experience while they are in her care.

The CTE program has not only given Fabian the knowledge and skills necessary for a health science profession, but it has also laid the foundation for her to pursue a medical career.

“My advice to other CTE students is to take advantage of this opportunity that the program is giving you. If you want to be in the medical field, this is the perfect way to start, grow, learn and gain the experience to move forward in your career,” says Fabian.  EKGT
