Two Sam Rayburn High School students win at the Scholastic Awards

Out of the nearly 110,000 students that competed, two Sam Rayburn High School students received National Medals at the 2020 Scholastic Awards.

The works entered by senior Anthony Vega and junior Marco Sosa, placed within the top one percent of all submissions. Vega and Sosa’s works were chosen by leaders in the arts to receive National Medals based on their technical skill, originality and personal voice. By winning the award, the students join the ranks of notable past winners such as Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Joyce Carol Oates and Andy Warhol.

“In the last seven years, Pasadena ISD students have achieved recognition and awards at the national level in this contest,” said Shannon Raygoza Visual Art Curriculum Specialist for Pasadena ISD. "This year is no different.”

What will be different this year is the ability of the medalists to travel to New York City, receive recognition at Carnegie Hall and have their submissions displayed at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute. The Scholastic Awards have notified participants that in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the student’s works will be celebrated through a virtual exhibit.

The winning entries are:

-Anthony Vega, Sam Rayburn High School senior, won the National Silver Medal

-Marco Sosa, Sam Rayburn High School junior, won the National Gold Medal and the National Silver Medal
