Jackson and Miller Intermediate captured top 10 spots in this year’s State Academic Pentathlon competition.

Out of 51 schools in the state, Jackson Intermediate won fifth place in the seventh grade competition and Miller Intermediate won seventh place in the eighth grade competition.

The event tested pentathletes in five fields including history, language arts, science, math and the Super Quiz – an oral competition in which students were tested on their knowledge of historical events. Miller Intermediate eighth grader Blas Estrada swept first place in the quiz.

Both schools also put a few wins under their belts in the Regional competition.

Jackson’s seventh grade team placed second overall and first overall in the Super Quiz at Regionals.

This is the first time Jackson Intermediate has bagged regional and state victories.

“There is nothing that they cannot do,” Paula Sword, Jackson Intermediate principal said. “Success breeds success. They went out there and brought back success to the school. Now other students know that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.”

In her first year, Miller’s Pentathlon coach, Aislinn Clinch has already led her seventh and eighth grade teams to victory.

The school dominated at the Regional competition. The eighth grade team swept Gold in the Super Quiz and overall, while the seventh grade team placed second overall and first overall in the Super Quiz.

“This accomplishment is uplifting for the entire student body, parents and community,” Kimberly Kelley, Miller’s principal said. “Words cannot express how proud I am of our students and their coaches.”
