Rayburn High School secondary biology teacher Heidi Butcher, known to her students as “Queen Nerdling,” traded the scorching Texas heat to take a trip below the equator and watch whales in the wild in Kaikoura, New Zealand.

Known for its spectacular marine environment, Kaikoura, located off the southern coastline of New Zealand, gives sightseers an extraordinary show full of giant sperm whales that can grow up to 20 meters, along with dusky dolphins, seals and royal albatross.

While Butcher has been getting extra use out of her camera, she traveled to Kaikoura to study and explore marine life.
