HOUSTON MARATHON FOUNDATION AWARDS A TOTAL OF $3,000 TO PISD EDUCATORS

Three Pasadena ISD educators were each awarded grants totaling $1,000 by the Houston Marathon Foundation as part of the organization’s 50th anniversary initiative. The grant recipients are: Alejandra Guevara, Fisher Elementary; Marissa Stinson, L.F. Smith Elementary; and Jesus Mejia, Sam Rayburn High School.

Sponsored by Chevron Houston, the grant program supports teachers and coaches throughout the Houston area who have been instrumental in helping students maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle through running and wellness.

All grant recipients were nominated by individuals in the community.

"I’ve run the Aramco half marathon for about eight years and it means so much to me that I have been awarded my very first grant in my teaching career from Chevron and the Houston Marathon Foundation," said Alejandra.

Alejandra hopes to fund programs at her school like the Fun-Run which exposes students to outdoor running and cross country. "This grant means so much to my students and me because it will inspire us to explore the beauty of running," said Alejandra Guevara, PE teacher at Fisher Elementary.

"We are going to use this grant to get new equipment such as jump ropes, hula hoops, and volleyballs. It would allow each of our students to have a piece of equipment to work on their skills independently and maximize instructional time... We are extremely excited and grateful," said Marissa Stinton, PE teacher at L.F. Smith Elementary.

"Honestly, this grant means a lot to me simply because someone went out of their way to nominate me. I still have no idea who it was, but whoever that person is, thank you so much," said Jesus Mejia, assistant soccer coach at Sam Rayburn High School.

Jesus Mejia is still undecided on what the grant will be used for.

"Overall, I plan on using the money in a way that can help the students grow in the classroom or on the soccer pitch, " said Jesus.
