Over 400 cadets from Sam Rayburn, Pasadena, Dobie and South Houston High Schools gathered recently for the annual JROTC Battle on the Bayou competition. Students competed in a variety of activities from rock walk climbing, tug-of-war, to sumo wrestling.

This year, bragging rights went to Rayburn High School’s JROTC for being named Champion of the districtwide competition, defeating the Pasadena High School Marines, Dobie’s High’s Air Force and the Navy from South Houston. The Rayburn JROTC will have the privilege to guard the JROTC Battle on the Bayou trophy until next year’s competition.

“This is a bonding event that builds team esprit de corps within school JROTCs and between Pasadena ISD JROTCs,” Rayburn High School Lt. Col. Alan Mooneyham said. “I have to give credit to Pasadena USMC JROTC, since they started the competition back in 2006. I saw then how it bonded my cadets as a cohesive team, and I knew we had to continue doing this every year.”

The four JROTC units will gather again November 7, to present the Colors with a joint service Color Guard at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium during the Sam Rayburn and Pasadena football game.
