Pasadena ISD Fine Arts programs produced another big win this month when Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials selected 16 student artists to showcase their artwork at this year’s rodeo.

Sam Rayburn High School students accounted for half of the selections with one Best of Show, two Gold Medals, and five Special Merit Awards. Dobie High School also placed four students in the Special Merit category.

Jessup Elementary’s Aryanna Chapa was the only elementary student to place, earning a Gold Medal ribbon. Lizbeth Garcia from DeZavala Middle School took Best of Show in her category.

Southmore swept the intermediate category with eighth grader Angela Alfaro Sanchez winning a Gold Medal ribbon and seventh grader Angelica Ramirez winning Best of Show.

Sam Rayburn High School seniors Raina Baggerly and Vanessa Sosa took Gold Medals and senior Patricia Ontiveros earned Best of Show in the high school category.

A total of nine Special Merit Awards were earned by the following students: Dobie High School students Abrahan Alanis, Karen Flores, Uyen Pham and Tu Anh N. Tran; and Sam Rayburn High School students Ruby Ayala, Israel Jimenez, Brandon Leal, Elissa Martinez and Denisse Molina.

The winning artwork will be on exhibit at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Hayloft Gallery at the NRG Stadium March 3-22. An award ceremony will take place March 7 where the students will receive their ribbons.

High school students will advance to the Grand Prix round for a chance to sell their artwork at auction. Art pieces from 52 surrounding districts will be judged, with only 62 pieces taken to auction for the chance to secure scholarship funds.

Earlier this month, an estimated 500 spectators attended the rodeo art open house at the administration building. The exhibit showcased all rodeo art submissions from district students in elementary through high school.
