From funny hats to book inspired costumes, enthusiasm spread as Pasadena ISD celebrated the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, March 2.

The literacy awareness program inspires students to celebrate reading on the birthday of the beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss.

“Read Across America is a wonderful day for students and staff to get excited about reading,” said Wendy Wiseburn, principal at Frazier Elementary. “Everyone can remember a favorite Dr. Seuss book. The kids and staff look forward to this every year.”

In observance of the annual holiday, campuses participated in fun reading activities and received special guest visits from district officials and community members who read to students and encouraged them to explore the world by opening a book.

“Students who regularly pick up a book for pleasure develop an intrinsic enjoyment of reading and become lifelong readers,” Christine Van Hamersveld, Pasadena ISD director of libraries and Instructional materials said. “These avid readers develop good writing and communication skills, which can have long-term benefits. Additionally, reading allows students to ‘travel’ the world and have a greater understanding and appreciation for other cultures.”

Read Across America Day may officially take place once a year, but reading is an on-going celebration within the district. Last school year, students checked out nearly 3 million books, which is up 3.57 percent since the 2012-13 school year. The number of e-books (electronic printed books) downloaded increased to 456,591, which is up 41 percent. In addition, students visited their school library a total of 1.6 million times in 2013-14.
