Gardens Elementary School has been open since fall 2014 to staff and students and Thursday, May 14 marked the official dedication of the new state-of-the-art campus.

The school held a dedication ceremony to mark the special occasion with parents, staff and community.

There was barely an empty seat in the cafeteria during the ceremony. Everyone from the Board of Trustees; Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kirk Lewis; district administration and school staff were in attendance. Special guests included former Gardens principals E.J. Ritchey, who served from 1961-66 and Celia Layton who served from 1985-2014.

To start the ceremony, students in the Music 4 Everyone ABLE program performed two songs thanking everyone for coming to share in their special night.

Dr. Lewis welcomed the crowd to Gardens and spoke about the significance of the evening.

“It means a lot to us to be able to dedicate this new building to the students and staff of Gardens Elementary,” he said. “This has been a long time coming. Special thanks to all of you, the community and the voters for supporting the construction of this new school with the passage of the 2011 bond.”

The school’s Principal Lindsey Lesniewski and Board of Trustees member Jack Bailey, each expressed warm sentiments about the finished campus.

“During the 2011 bond election, the community truly supported us because they knew that our children needed a campus that would support student learning,” Lesniewski said. “It is wonderful that through their support, the new facility provides students with everything they need to be successful and the community deserves it.”

Bailey shared some of the school’s history including it’s beginning in 1944.

“The students and staff have patiently endured the challenges of an aging building originally constructed in 1944 in anticipation of one day, moving into this new, beautiful facility,” Bailey said.

Staff, faculty and students of Gardens were invited to share one word that describes their experience at the campus. They offered words like steadfast, dedicated, loyal, blessed, courageous, friends, safe, overcomers and committed. Each of the individuals sharing a heartfelt story with their word.

“My word is blessed. It is truly a blessing to work with these kids, these families and this staff,” Lilliana Garza, Gardens Counselor said. “Thank you so much for all that you do. “
