Each year, Pasadena ISD honors employees who have dedicated years of service to making a difference in the lives of students.

This year, the School Board and administrative leadership recognized over 130 retirees and about 250 employees with 20 to 45 years of experience at the 66th Annual Service Awards Thursday, April 30.

When these retirees bid farewell to the district, they will represent 3,099 years of experience collectively.

“We appreciate the outstanding job every one of you has done for our children,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kirk Lewis said to the employees attending the event. “You are the reason Pasadena ISD is successful. You have inspired hope in our children and we thank you for that.”

Each board member expressed gratitude in their own special way as employees walked across the stage to be recognized in front of their peers for their longevity in education.

The event bridged together educators and students as a talented group of Rayburn freshmen put their artistic skills to paper and painted caricatures of several honorees. Laughter filled the air when students presented employees with the comical rendering of their faces and personalities.

Four of the district’s most seasoned employees, Barbara Fuqua, Nell Huffman, Shirlyn Ross, and Roger Woest, reached their 45-year mark this year.

A demonstration of the close-knit ties of the district family happened when Roger Woest took a break from entertaining attendees with his piano performance and walked in front of staff to be recognized for 45 years of service. Without a cue from the night’s presenters, the audience gave him a standing ovation for his excellence of service through the years as a counselor, testing and gifted and talented coordinator, curriculum director and assistant superintendent. Woest creatively balances his love of teaching and piano playing and frequently performs at public events.

Another 45-year employee, Nell Huffman, head secretary at Pasadena High School, was greeted with adoration as she walked across the stage to shake hands with board members.

Coworkers consider Huffman to be the heart of Pasadena High keeping the school organized and in line. She received high praise from her Pasadena ISD family during the reception.

Huffman expressed the sentiments of all the honorees by saying, “This is such a beautiful event and I am truly honored to be here after 45 years.”
