Sam Rayburn receiver Justin Jaramillo (20) leaps high into the air to snag a 29-yard TD pass from Jeremiah Williams midway through the second quarter. The bottom frame tells the story of the play -- a fourth-and-25 call that paid off and gave the Texans a 14-7 lead.
3653Sam Rayburn sophomores Stanley Hackett and Jeremiah Williams may have come of age on Friday night. But as a team, the Texans couldn’t overcome a 17-point third quarter explosion by Clear Lake at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The 17 points -- scored within a span of just over two minutes -- wiped out a Texans halftime lead and spurred the Falcons to a 38-34 victory.

Hackett carried 27 times for 152 yards, most of it in the second quarter when the Texans, looking for their first victory in nearly two years, scored three touchdowns to take a 21-14 halftime lead.

Hackett scored on runs of 35 and 21 yards in the quarter.  Midway through the fourth quarter, with Rayburn  down by 10 points, Hackett raced 71 yards for a TD after grabbing a pass from Williams.

Williams, who found Justin Jaramillo for a 29-yard scoring strike in the second quarter, completed 5 of 8 passes in the contest for 133 yards.

Still, the Texans fumbled nine times in the contest, losing four and suffering an interception. That was too much for the Rayburn defense to digest, despite four Texans interceptions.Clear Lake piled up 451 total yards and 21 first downs without fumbling the ball.

Falcons quarterback Will Smith passed for 276 yards and ran for 70 more.

With his team trailing by seven at halftime, Smith hooked up with Tanner Coulson for a 13-yard TD strike to ignite the Falcons’ third-quarter explosion. Just over a minute later, Smith scored on a 49-yard run. Barely a minute after that, Clear Lake’s Max Finch kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Williams countered with a 7-yard TD run early in the fourth, but the Falcons answered that with a 12-yard TD run by Ahmad Harris.

Hackett’s 71-yard TD reception got the Texans to within six points, but the extra-point attempt failed. Rayburn threatened to win the game in the closing seconds, but a drive that penetrated the Falcons’ 10-yard line ended on downs.

The Texans open District 22-6A play next weekend against South Houston, which lost to Channelview, 56-15, on Friday night.
