Pasadena quarterback Valor Ojeda and his backfield mate, Marwin Periera, combined for 283 rushing yards Thursday night as the Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter for a 35-28 victory over Houston Chavez at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles used the victory to post a 2-0 record for the non-district portion of their schedule and avenge a 49-48 loss to the Lobos last season. The contest was the season-opener for Chavez.

With the game tied at 28-28 and just 38 seconds to play in regulation, Ojeda connected with Pablo Martinez from 20 yards out for the winning points. A Chavez threat in the remaining time was snuffed out by an interception by Edgar Trujillo.

Periera had staked the Eagles to a 28-21 on the first play of the final quarter when he scored from five yards out. He finished the game with 175 yards on the ground on 35 carries. Ojeda rushed for 108 yards on 30 carries.

With less than five minutes to play, the Eagles were hit with the costliest turnover in an error-filled game. Lobos defensive back Justin Cofield picked up an Eagles fumble and raced 74 yards to tie the game.

The teams combined for 10 fumbles, five of them lost, and 17 penalties costing 140 yards.

Forced to punt after Cofield’s score, the Eagles used an interception by Elier Palos to get the ball right back. Ojeda’s winning TD pass capped a 35-yard drive.

Chavez took a 14-0 lead in the first half on a 65-yard TD pass from Devaziea Wilson to Juwan Duckworth and a 15-yard TD run by Dominic Franklin. Pasadena cut the lead in half by halftime on a 10-yard TD run by Ojeda.

A 5-yard TD run by Periera and a 9-yarder by Ojeda lifted the Eagles to a 21-14 lead midway through the third quarter that was wiped out by a 33-yard TD scamper by Duckworth, the game’s leading rushing with 184 yards on 15 carries.

Pasadena opens District 22-6A action next week against Memorial, 0-2 after losing to Aldine Davis 21-3 on Thursday night.
