sideThree veterans of state championship football games made presentations on Monday to Pasadena ISD coaches at the State Championship Coaches Clinic, hosted by the Pasadena ISD Athletics Department.

Addressing the group were Bob Gillis, who led El Campo to the state title game in 2012; Rusty Dowling, who coached Texas City to state championships in 1997 and 1999; and Marty Criswell, who guided Denison to the 1984 state title.

Coaches from Pasadena ISD high schools and intermediate schools attended the clinic, which was held at the Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School.

Rodney Chant, the district's director of athletics, served as moderator. Chant was recently elected the Region 5 director for the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association. His term in that position runs for two years.

Chant said the clinic's purpose was “to use this opportunity to give all of our coaches vital information that they can use to take back to their programs.”

Gillis spoke to the coaches on the topic, "Building a State Championship Program."

Criswell's topic was "Navigating a 16-Game Season," and Dowling spoke on "Program Organization."
