8617CHANNELVIEW -- Port Arthur Memorial’s high-low tandem of Dorian Chatman and Ron Taylor combined for 33 points on Tuesday night to power the Titans to a 55-46 victory over South Houston in the first round of the Class 6A boys basketball playoffs.

Memorial, the runner-up in District 21-6A, took control of the game with an 11-2 run to close out the third quarter. Leading 34-26 going into the final quarter, the Titans went to a spread offense and kept the Trojans at bay with quick breaks to the basket and a flurry of free throws.

Chatman, a 6-6 post, and Taylor, a 5-11 point guard, combined for 11 free throws in the final quarter. Memorial connected on 16 of 19 free throws in the game.

The Trojans, the third-place team in District 22-6A, pulled within four points three times in the final six minutes, the last time on a pair of free throws by Kendle Hicks with 1:31 left in the game. But Taylor answered with two free throws before a South Houston turnover in the final minute allowed Memorial to coast the rest of the way.

The Trojans failed to add another point after Hicks’s free throws.

Taylor led all scorers with 17 points while Chatman added 16. Daniel Johnson scored 11 to lead South Houston while Hicks added 10.

The game closed out the season for Pasadena ISD basketball teams. Dobie, the No. 4 team in 22-6A, fell to 21-6A champion North Shore 79-52 in first-round action in Deer Park on Tuesday night.

South Houston finished the season with a 22-11 record while the Longhorns finished at 17-17.

Dobie’s Lady Longhorns, the only Pasadena ISD girls team to make the playoffs, bowed out last week in their post-season opener against North Shore, 79-30.
