A layup by Bennie Hamilton with 10 seconds left sealed a 66-62 victory for the Trojans in a battle between the Pasadena ISD’s two hottest teams played out at the Trojans Gym.

A year ago, South Houston took the No. 3 playoff spot in the district while Rayburn claimed the No. 4 postseason berth. Both are considered contenders for the district title this season.

Now 10-3 for the season, the Trojans raced to a 23-point lead in the third quarter and led 56-39 going into the final quarter. But Edwards scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half, fueling a Rayburn comeback that brought the Texans to within two points in the closing seconds.

A three-pointer by Steven Torres with 20 seconds left sliced South Houston’s lead to 64-62. The Trojans then nearly fell victim to the Texans’ press. Under heavy pressure, South Houston’s Nick Hernandez launched a long pass down the court that nearly bounced out of bounds.

Hamilton ended up with the ball on the baseline and cut into the lane for an easy bucket.

Rayburn’s final possession ended on a bad-pass turnover.

R’sherd Thompson matched Edwards’ 20 points for the Trojans. Hernandez added 13, Kendle Hicks scored 12 and Hamilton 10

Deante Hunt added 14 for the Texans, now 6-3 for the season.

Rayburn's Stephen Alaniz Flores gets a warm reception from teammates after nailing a three-pointer late in the game that cut the Trojans' lead to just two points.
