LONG HAULS THAT SAVED THE HORNS: Dobie's Rashaad Randall races 60 yards (top) late in the third quarter to erase Memorial's 20-14 lead. Less than two minutes later (bottom), Randall clicked off 87 yards for a TD that lifted the Longhorns to a 28-20 lead.
newDobie’s Rashaad Randall cracked two long touchdown runs – less than two minutes apart late in the third quarter -- to power the Longhorns to a come-from-behind, 37-20 victory Thursday night over a revitalized Memorial team with serious designs on what would have been District 22-6A’s biggest upset this season.

The Mavericks, with just one victory to show for their fall efforts, stood toe-to-toe with the playoff-bound Longhorns through most of the first three quarters and held a 20-14 lead with less than three minutes left in the third.

But Randall, one of the area’s premier running backs, erased that lead with a 60-yard dash to the end zone with 2:16 remaining in the quarter.

Dobie quickly got the ball back and Randall wasted no time delivering another long-distance blow, this time with an 87-yard TD romp that put the Longhorns up 28-20 with 28 seconds still left  in the quarter.

In all, the Longhorns tallied the game’s final 23 points. Dobie’s defense added a safety early in the fourth quarter and quarterback Joe Gonzalez tacked on a 42-yard TD run just over a minute later.

The victory enable the Longhorns to keep alive a winning streak that began after a 0-4 start and now stands at six games. That streak will be put to a much bigger test next week when Dobie, the third-place team in 22-6A, meets North Shore in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

That game has been set for next Friday night at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Dobie has been eliminated by North Shore in the first round of the playoffs each of the past three seasons, the closest margin in those three games being 20 points.

Memorial finished the season with a 1-9 overall record and a 1-7 mark in district play.

Randall rushed for 215 yards on 22 carries, but was bottled up for much of the contest by the Mavericks’ suddenly spirited defense. Meanwhile, Memorial quarterback Izrael Trevino pumped life into the Mavericks’ previously anemic offense with a surprise assault through the air.

Trevino threw two TD  passes, both in the second quarter, to lift the Mavericks to a 14-7 lead. Trevino connected with Nicholas Fuselier on a 68-yard bomb to offset a 34-yard TD run by Dobie’s Derrick Matthews that broke the scoring ice after a scoreless first quarter.

Late in the second quarter, Trevino found Antonio Chioreanu from four yards out for another Mavs’ TD. With 25 seconds left in the half, Gonzalez fired a 15-yard TD strike to Breon Simmons to earn the Longhorns a 14-14 halftime tie.

Trevino completed only 8 of 31 passes in the game, but those eight completions covered 171 yards.

Dobie fumbled away the second-half kickoff, setting up a 35-yard field goal by Jesus Dozal  that gave Memorial a 17-14 lead. Later in the quarter. The Mavericks’ Christian Morales boomed a 47-yard field goal to hike Memorial’s lead to 20-14.

Just minutes later, Randall began his rampage, dousing the Mavericks’ upset hopes.
