4672UPDATE: Pearland defeated Memorial 30-3 on Saturday, a victory that allowed Dobie to clinch a spot in the state playoffs, which begin in three weeks. The Longhorns, 4-2 in District 22-6A action, can finish no worse that fourth in league play and now own a head-to-head victory over all other teams still in the running to finish in a tie for fourth. Dobie can finish third by beating Sam Rayburn and Memorial its final two games.

ALVIN – Flat and fumble-prone, Dobie turned to a backup quarterback and overcame an 11-point deficit in the final five minutes for a 35-31 victory over Alvin on Friday night that all but secured a state playoff for the Longhorns.

Junior Tyler Giron came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes in the closing minutes and save the Longhorns from what would have been a costly upset.

With Dobie trailing 31-20, Giron connected with Derrick Matthews for a 48-yard TD strike on fourth down with 4:54 left in the game. Giron then darted into the end on a two-point conversion run to cut the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 31-28.

Alvin’s attempt to run out the clock on offense fell victim to sloppy penalties. The Longhorns got a punt return by Jaylen Bolden to the Jackets’ 31-yard line with less than two minutes left.

Then, after a pair of incompletions, Giron found Darius Simmons from 12-yards out -- and with just 57 seconds left on the clock -- for the winning points.

The victory, coming on the heels of Dobie’s upset of Pearland Dawson last week, was the Longhorns’ fourth straight after four losses to open the season. Now 4-2 in District 22-6A play, Dobie can clinch a spot in the playoffs as early as Saturday. A Pearland victory over Memorial would allow the Longhorns to nail down at least the No. 4 playoff spot in 22-6A.

The more likely scenario for the Longhorns is the No. 3 spot. To earn it, Dobie need only beat Sam Rayburn and Memorial in its final two games. Those two schools have only one victory between them this season.

Against Alvin, the Longhorns somehow survived six turnovers – four lost fumbles and two interceptions. One of the fumbles was scooped up by Jackets’ star Gunner Olszewski, who returned it 56 yards for a TD late in the first half. The TD hiked Alvin’s lead to 28-14.

The Jackets went turnover-free in the contest.

Dobie managed to cut the halftime deficit to 28-17 on a 35-yard field goal by Alex Saldivar, who added a 33-yarder for the only points of the third quarter.

The Longhorns jumped to a quick 7-0 lead on a 50-yard blast by Rashaad Randall, Dobie rushing hero against Dawson. Randall scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter, but otherwise was held in check by the Alvin defense.

Randall finished with 120 yards on 27 carries, losing game-high honors to Alvin’s Carlos Garcia, who gained 143 yards on 21 carries. Garcia scored on a 41-yard gallop less than two minutes after Randall’s 50-yarder. He matched Randall’s one-yard TD as well, scoring on a four-yard jaunt on the next series.

It was Giron who posted the most meaningful numbers, completing 10 of 14 passes for 133 yards.
