2184The football pecking order for Pasadena ISD schools took a pounding on Saturday night at the hands of the Pasadena Eagles, who piled on the final 23 points of the game in 43-19 victory over Memorial at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The victory was the Eagles’ first over the Mavericks in the decade of competition between the two schools.

Powered by junior quarterback Valor Ojeda, a pack of hungry backs and a spirited defense, Pasadena chalked up 476 yards of total offense. Ojeda threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He added two more TDs on the ground while pacing all rushers with 141 yards on 22 carries.

The Eagles produced a major momentum shift on a play that appeared to represent Memorial’s moment of opportunity.

With 2:23 left in the first half, the Mavericks pulled to within a point, at 20-19, on a 1-yard TD plunge by quarterback Izrael Trevino. But the Eagles blocked the point-after kick, and Pasadena’s Ricky Bernal promptly picked up the loose ball and raced the length of the field for two points.

Bernal’s dash gave the Eagles a 22-19 lead. Pasadena’s defense tossed a shutout after that while Ojeda and his teammates took complete control of the game.

Ojeda scored on a 30-yard run early in the third quarter. Then, midway through the fourth, Ojeda hooked up with Uriel Hill on a 51-yard TD strike. And with just over a minute left in the contest, Matthew Randle scooped up a Memorial fumble and returned it 25 yards for the game’s final TD.

The Eagles’ first-half TDs came on a 24-yard run by Ojeda, a 74-yard TD pass from Ojeda to Pablo Martinez and a 44-yard run by Marvin Pereira.

The Mavericks’ other first first-half TDs came on a 10-yard run by Trevino and a 23-yard interception return by Albert Bali.

Trevino wan for 85 yards on 21 carries to pace Memorial’s offense.

The Eagles now stand 2-1 for the season and 1-0 in District 22-6A action. The Mavericks fell to 0-3 and 0-1.
