9825Fort Bend Kempner overcame 10 fumbles Saturday night – two of which resulted in Rayburn touchdowns – en route to a 34-14 season-opening victory over the Texans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The two teams combined for 13 fumbles which resulted in nine turnovers. Rayburn’s three lost fumbles spoiled the best efforts of the Texans’ offense to reach the end zone.

The Cougars, who lost six fumbles, handily brushed aside their ball-handling errors.

Kempner scored in every quarter, piling up 16 first downs to Rayburn’s five.

Brenden Nagel gave the Cougars a 14-0 halftime lead with a 75-yard run on the second play of the game and a nine-yard run late in the second quarter.

Ferris Green added a five-yard TD run and Nicholas Anderson a 15-yard TD run, both in the third quarter, as Kempner hiked its lead to 28-0.

The Texans closed the gap on a 44-yard fumble return by De’Andre Rogers for a TD and then an end zone fumble recovery by Brandon Marquez, both in the fourth quarter.

On the first play following the kickoff, Bill Reagins bolted 55 yard for another Kempner TD and the final points of the game.
