595Deer Park’s Isaac Bonuz scored three touchdowns Friday night, including a pair of late-game scores that lifted the Deer to a come-from-behind 28-21 victory over Dobie at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Billed as one of the area’s best season-openers, the contest turned into a see-saw affair featuring two tie scores. A third tie – this one at 21-21 – appeared in the cards until the Deer failed to convert a PAT following a one-yard TD run by Bonuz with 2:51 left in the third quarter.

The conversion miss left the Longhorns nursing a 21-20 lead.

The Deer made amends with 8:01 left in the game when Bonuz scored his third TD, this one on a two-yard run. Deer Park quarterback Cameron Thompson then connected with Logan Berryhill for a two-point conversion.

Thompson found Berryhill on a 38-yard TD completion to open the scoring late in the first quarter.  The Longhorns countered with a one-yard TD plunge by quarterback Joe Gonzalez. The 7-7 tie held at intermission.

Dobie converted a fumble on the second-half kickoff into a one-yard go-ahead TD by Rashaad Randall. But Bonuz answered with a 41-yard TD scamper to tie the game at 14-14.

The Longhorns unleashed their own speed back in Chris Washington, who bolted 36 yards for a TD, giving Dobie a 21-14 lead at the midway mark of the third quarter. But it was all Deer Park, with Bonuz carrying the load, the rest of the way.

Bonuz finished with 127 yards on 15 carries. Washington led Dobie with 78 yards on seven carries.

The Longhorns earned a 361-331 edge in total yards.
