the grip of the visitors from Galena Park in their 2014 debut.

The Lady Yellowjackets rolled to tight victories in three straight games for a 3-0 takedown of the Lady Texans in the season-opener for both teams and one of hundreds of state sports startups for the new school year.  The scores were 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21.

Before the game, Rayburn Principal Robert Stock led a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Texans’ new gym, a competition replacement for the school’s original gym that dates to the opening of Rayburn in 1964.

South Houston High, which opened in 1957, is also unveiling its new competition gym this month. Both facilities were part of the 2011 bond package approved by voters.

Desarae Flores led the Lady Texans with nine kills.

Among Pasadena ISD schools, Dobie enjoyed the best opening day. The Lady Longhorns swept North Shore and Fort Bend Elkins in a tri-match on the Dobie campus. Dobie beat North Shore 25-17, 25- 12 and 25-18, then whipped Elkins 25-23, 25-12, 25-23.

The opening of volleyball season also marked the debut of the 6A classification in UIL sports. Pasadena ISD schools compete in District 22-6A this season along with Pearland, Pearland Dawson, Alvin and Manvel.
