The Mayor’s Office of Education Initiatives, along with the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Houston Arts Partners announced the inaugural Mayor’s Art Scholarship: Neighborhoods, Identity, and Diversity during the National Arts in Education Week in September 2013.

The competition which fosters collaboration among Houston-area high school fine arts departments and recognizes excellence in student art, which expresses cultural identities and features of life in Houston area neighborhoods was open to students in the 11
th and 12th grades. The submitted art was juried by a panel of  local professional artists. Awards categories were separated  by grade level.

Pasadena ISD art students from Rayburn High School submitted four pieces between the two categories and all will be on display until the end of April at Houston City Hall, 901 Bagby St., Houston, Texas. Three of the four pieces earned scholarships in the Junior Prize Category.

The winners are: First Place – Jacqueline Villarreal; Second Place – Denisse Molina; and Third Place – Meagan Wallace. All students are under the direction of Mr. Victor Raygoza.
