Shining Stars Gala Rewards Students, Teachers Hard Work

Pasadena ISD’s Education Foundation held its annual Shining Stars Gala recently honoring the top 10 students from each of the five district high schools.

Each year MDI Enterprise, Inc. provides the top 10 students with either a laptop or tablet at the event, which is held in May. These students also nominate a teacher who has made a significant difference in their lives.

Amanda Ramirez, senior at Sam Rayburn High School shared her thoughts about her distinguished educator Lyndon Wang.

“Mr. Wang is my definition of perseverance. With him, I learned that improvement is limitless. You can always strive to become even better. He showed me that despite obstacles in life, you have to keep moving forward,” she said. “New opportunities will rise and lead you to a better future.”

The event also honors an organization that has gone above and beyond to volunteer time and resources to the Education foundation with the Community Shining Star Award. This year’s recipient is the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

“It is truly an honor to accept this award and for the chamber of commerce to join forces with the Pasadena Education Foundation for the benefit of the children in our community,” Pasadena Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Cristina Womack said.

A special presentation was also made to LyondellBasell Houston Refining for their generous donation of funds, resources and numerous volunteers to keep the event running smoothly.

The Pasadena ISD Education Foundation supports educational programs and provides funds for educational programs and activities which either have not been funded or have been under-funded by the normal operating budget. Distributed to teachers who apply in the form of mini-grants, the funds are used to facilitate innovative teaching strategies, energize student achievement and skill development, recognize and encourage staff excellence and expand community involvement from individuals, businesses and civic organizations.
