6766They may need spectacles to read, but the Pasadena ISD old-timers put on a spectacle with some dead-eye shooting on Saturday night, whipping Deer Park 58-49 in the Second Annual Alumni Challenge at Phillips Field House.

Led by sharp-shooting guard J.R. Ford, the Pasadena ISD alums poured in an incredible 11 three-pointers en route to squaring the series at a game apiece and claiming the Alumni Challenge Trophy, at least until 2015.

Ford, a 2007 South Houston High graduate, scored a game-high 15 points, a dozen of which came on a blizzard of four three-pointers.

Bill Cole, a 1982 Dobie alum, added a pair of three-pointers and 10 points. Manny Coronado, a 1992 Pasadena High grad, also hit a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points.

Cole supplied the game’s biggest moment – although it didn’t count. A half-second after the first-quarter buzzer sounded, Cole launched a hook shot from just across the midcourt line that ripped the net.

Deer Park played well but couldn’t match the Pasadena ISD’s outside shooting. The Deer grads made only three three-pointers.

Ryan Bright, a 2004 grad, led the way for the Deer with nine points. Tom Fuller, a 1979 alum, and Diego Jaramillo, a 2004 grad, scored seven each.

The Pasadenians jumped to an 8-0 lead, but the Deer closed the first-quarter gap to 13-9. Pasadena led by six at the half and by only three going into the fourth quarter.

With open substitution rules in effect, Pasadena poured in 22 points in just six minutes, the time allotted for each quarter.

The contest was played as a warm-up to the boys championship game of the McDonald’s Texas Invitational and was sponsored by Loomis International, Inc.
