6138South Houston junior Nick Hernandez fueled a decisive third-quarter burst with a pair of three-pointers as the Trojans broke in a new season – and a new gym – with a 42-39 victory over historic rival Deer Park on Monday night.

Hernandez scored eight of his game-high 14 points in the third quarter to spark the Trojans to a 15-4 run that broke a 21-all halftime tie and gave South Houston a 36-25 advantage going into the final quarter.

The Trojans needed every bit of it as the Deer closed the gap to 41-39 with 12 seconds to play on a pair of free throws by Austin Layton.

The Deer applied a quick foul on Hernandez, who made one of two free throws with eight seconds left to effectively ice the outcome.

The Trojans would have had an easier time if not for poor foul-shooting. South Houston made only 9 of 24 from the free-throw line.

The game was the first boys varsity contest in the Trojans’ new competition gym and drew a large crowd.

David Johnson added six points to the Trojans’ tally. Noah Vasquez led the Deer with 12 points while Layton added 8.
