South Houston's Richard Jackson (6) leads a charge that wraps up Rayburn's Andrew Cancino on a kickoff return.
2081Rayburn’s plunge into District 22-6A action went into the books as a false start Friday night – nine false starts, in fact. One of them, on a two-point conversion try that could have tied the game in the fourth quarter, propelled equally error-prone South Houston to a 24-15 victory at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Trojans quarterback Tatum Girdy ran for two touchdowns and passed for another. But Girdy had a primary share of five lost fumbles that prevented South Houston from generating any meaningful momentum.

The Texans, down 7-3 at halftime, took the lead on a 31-yard TD pass from Andres Martinez to Armando Garcia less than three minutes into the second half. The PAT failed, leaving South Houston with just a two-point deficit.

The Trojans stormed back and took a 17-9 lead on a 63-yard TD pass from Girdy to Kerry Hubbard and a 38-yard field goal by Rudy Marban. But with 6:10 left in the game, Rayburn threatened to tie the game when Martinez hooked up with Garcia on a 17-yard TD strike, capping a 99-yard drive.

The PAT proved a curse for both teams. South Houston was called for encroachment, which moved the ball to the two. But Rayburn was flagged for a false start, leaving the Texans 7 yards away from a tie. Martinez was then knocked down a yard short of the goal, preserving South Houston’s 17-15 advantage.

After recovering the onside kick, the Trojans were treated to a 50-yard scamper by Waidi Oladimaji that set up a 4-yard TD run by Girdy that clinched the victory.

Girdy ran for 129 yards on 29 carries and passed for 108 more.

Stanley Hackett paced Rayburn’s ground attack with 150 yards on 23 carries.

The victory was the Trojans first of the season after two non-district losses. Rayburn fell to 0-3.

Players on both teams dedicated the game to Courtney Rosas, a local 11-year-old girl who is battling spinal muscular atrophy. Courtney participated in the coin clip before the game. (See photo in "Game Album" below.)
