2554Finally coming to grips with an early-season fumble problem, South Houston quarterback Tatum Girdy safely transported the football 160 yards on Friday night and scored three times as the Trojans raced by Memorial 28-14 at Veterans Memorial Stadium and dampened the Mavericks’ homecoming.

Girdy scored on TD runs of 32, 32 and 10 yards in overcoming ball-handling woes that plagued him last week in a Trojans victory over Rayburn and in the opening minutes against the Mavericks.

The Trojans, now 2-0 in District 22-6A action, scored 28 straight points after Memorial took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 10-yard pass from Izrael Trevino to Antoniu Chioreanu.

The Mavericks fell to 0-2 in district play and 0-4 overall.

Girdy countered Memorial’s early score with twin 32-yard bursts, one early in the second quarter and the other late in the third.

Early in the fourth, the Trojans' Joshua Williams returned an interception 38 yards. Midway through the fourth, Girdy scored from 10 yards out as South Houston took a 28-7 lead.

The Mavericks tacked on a consolation TD with less than four minutes left when Trevino scored from seven yards out.

Girdy’s 160 yards came on 29 carries. He also threw for 76 yards.

Ricky Hambright rushed for 105 yards to pace Memorial’s offense.
