0245BAYTOWN -- Baytown Sterling’s Angel Farris bedeviled Dobie on Saturday night, contributing to a pair of late rallies that carried the Lady Rangers to a 6-2 victory over the Lady Longhorns in the deciding game of the teams’ opening-round series of the state Class 6A softball playoffs.

The Lady Rangers bounced back from a 10-0 shellacking in the series opener on Thursday to even the series on Friday with a 1-0 victory in 10 innings.

In the do-or-die game, Sterling again had to come from behind, this time after falling behind 2-0 after a half-inning.

The Lady Rangers tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first -- and Sterling’s workhorse pitcher, Niki Gonzalez, held Dobie scoreless the rest of the way, allowing only three hits over the final six innings.

The 2-2 deadlock ended in the fifth when Farris led off with a double to left field. Madison Ibarra ran for Farris, broke for third on an infield grounder by Madisyn Cates and scored on a wild throw back to third. After another Dobie error, Alyssa Cantu delivered an RBI double to the fence in left.

Farris applied the finishing touch with a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the sixth.

Dobie scored its two runs in the first with the help of singles by Yvonne Whaley and Sady Olguin, a sacrifice fly by Marissa Longoria and a passed ball.

The third-place team in District 22-6A this spring, Dobie finished the season with a 21-11 record.

Deadlock is broken: Dobie third baseball Suzy Soza stretches in vain for a throw from first baseman Sady Olguin that was intended to catch Madison Ibarra advancing to third on an infield out in the fifth inning. The throw sailed through, allowing Ibarra to score what proved to be the winning run for Sterling.

Sterling's Angel Farris circles the bases after her two-run homer in the sixth.

Sterling's Bethany Busch plants her toe on the bag as Dobie's Sady Olguin stretches for the throw. Busch was safe on the infield hit in the second inning.

Dobie sophomore Michelle Kristoff winds and deals in the second inning.

In Game 2, Sterling's Eliza Bejarano reaches for an infield throw, retiring Dobie's Alexa Munoz.

In Game 2, Sterling shortstop Bethany Busch steps on second for a force on Dobie's Suzy Soza.

In Game 2, Dobie's Sady Olguin beats out an infield grounder as Chris Swinnen, the Lady Longhorns' assistant coach, provides the safe sign.
