sideHome-turf advantage proved to be of little benefit to the Memorial and Rayburn boys soccer teams, both of which lost their state playoff openers on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Neither team managed a goal.

The Mavericks, seeded second in District 22-6A, were upset by C.E. King, 3-0. The Panthers entered the playoffs as the No. 3 team from District 21-6A.

The Texans, 22-6A’s No. 4 team, actually played better in their contest against heavily favored North Shore, the 21-6A champion. Rayburn fell 2-0, giving up both goals in the first half.

First-round action continues on Friday with only Dobie still alive among Pasadena ISD entries.

The Longhorns’ boys champions take on Goose Creek Memorial at 7 p.m. in Baytown.

The Longhorns’ girls squad, the No. 3 seed in 22-6A, plays second-seeded Atascocita at Galena Park ISD Stadium, also at 7 p.m.

C.E. King put the Mavericks on their heels with first-half goals by Jonathan Morales and Alan Lerma. Early in the second half, the Panthers took firm control on a goal by Jose Perez.

Memorial’s frustrations only deepened in the closing minutes. An apparent goal by Jacob Monares was nullified by an offsides call. With just over a minute left, Luis Aguirre drew a red card and left the game.

The North Shore-Rayburn game saw three players draw red cards, two going to North Shore players. The final minutes were played with the Mustangs able to put only eight players on the field and Rayburn nine.
