SOFTBALL- It took 11 innings and nearly four hours, but the Pasadena Memorial Lady Mavs softball team defeated the J. Frank Dobie Lady Longhorns 8-6 Monday night, April 24 at the San Jacinto South Campus to settle a tiebreaker for second place.

The district playoff game was necessary as both teams split their head-to-head games and finished the regular season tied with 11 wins and 3 losses.

With the win, the Lady Mavs will play North Shore as the second seed in the playoffs and the Lady Longhorns will take on Atascocita as the third seed.

Even though both teams had already secured a spot in the playoffs, the rivalry of the “Battle of the Beltway” was evident as fans in teal and orange packed the bleachers.

The Lady Longhorns struck in the bottom of the third inning with a RBI single by Taylor Pleasants (17).

A couple of home runs set the tone in the fourth inning as Pasadena Memorial’s Maria Andrade (00) had a solo shot and Alyssa Corpus (22) responded with a two-run blast over the right-center field wall for the Lady Longhorns.

A quiet fifth inning set up what would be an offensive explosion in the sixth.

The Lady Mavs’ Tori Garivey (12) brought in a run on a RBI double and then Maricruz Martinez (15) brought Garivey in with a RBI single. Patty Ortiz (11) and Reagan Gallegher (7) both singled as well to bring in three more runs to put Pasadena Memorial up 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dobie loaded the bases for Yvonne Whaley (1) who drove in two runs on a single to left field.

Down 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, pressure mounted for Dobie as Deja Mason Gaines (7) stepped up to the plate with two outs and a runner on second base.

Gaines responded with a RBI single to tie the game 6-6 for the Lady Longhorns and force extra innings.

Despite all the excitement and drama of the first seven innings, it took three and a half innings and a throwing error by Dobie catcher Allison Bravo (10) for another runner to cross home plate.

Lady Mav’s Anissa Gracia (8) scored from third base when the ball rolled into left-centerfield when Bravo misfired to second base on a steal attempt in the top of the eleventh inning.

Garivey’s (12) RBI single added extra insurance for the Lady Mavs who were able to hold Dobie scoreless in the bottom of the eleventh for the win.
