On August 6th, Ortiz vs. McKinson, presented by Golden Boy Promotions, featured a night full of spirited matchups, including some familiar faces. The co-main fight included Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Marlen Esparza, who defended her Flyweight Championship title against Eva Guzman in a ten-round unanimous decision.

In the undercard, Sam Rayburn alumnus, Carlos Nava, faced off against veteran boxer Rodolfo Hernandez. The Pasadena native controlled the majority of the fight, leading to an early second-round knock down and a fourth-round TKO.

This victory makes Nava’s new record 9-0 as he continues to make a name for himself on Golden Boy/DAZN platform.

In December of 2021, Nava signed with 3PointManagement (3PM), forcing him to move from Pasadena to North Hollywood.

“I’ve had to leave my family, friends and loved ones behind to go into training camp and prepare for all my upcoming fights,” said Nava.

The temporary sacrifice encourages him to train even harder and continue to face-off with the best in his weight class.

“I first started boxing in Pasadena and now I’m on undercards for Golden Boy/DAZN chasing my dreams and soon achieving them,” said Nava.

Nava first started boxing at the age of seven when his father, Miguel Nava Jr.,  took him to Kenny Weldon’s World Class Boxing Gym in Pasadena, TX.

“It means so much to represent Pasadena because of all the supporters I have in the city that I grew up in…I don’t do this to just provide for my family but because I love the sport and it can shine a light for all the upcoming kids and future generations,” said Nava.

Although his professional career recently started, Nava has already accumulated multiple accolades in his amature career, such as, becoming a Jr. Olympic National Gold medal, a Bronze National Youth medal, a 3x Golden Glove Champion and a 6x State of Texas Champion.

Nava believes that overcoming obstacles and staying determined is the key to success.

“You can do anything…You can be anything you want to be…As long as you believe in yourself and work hard.”

Nava’s journey is a testimony to the dreamers in the area.

“I want to give the Pasadena community hope to achieve greatness,” said Nava
