February 10th marks an important milestone in Pasadena High School history. On this date, Mayor Johnny Isbell presented the PHS JROTC with a Proclamation from the City of Pasadena for their community service efforts, declaring Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 PHS Marine Corps JROTC Day.

“The JROTC program here at Pasadena High School is wonderful and it is under great leadership,” Mayor Johnny Isbell said. “We want to thank all Marine Corps JROTC students of Pasadena High School for their dedication and outstanding contributions to the City of Pasadena. They truly deserve this honor.”

The proclamation recognizes the unit’s leadership and commitment to serving the citizens of Pasadena. During the summer, the JROTC donated 80 hours of their off time to help run a summer camp for eight schools in the greater Houston area. Last year, they volunteered at several locations including local hospitals, the senior center, and the Pasadena Rodeo. Shafi McCants, PHS JROTC instructor, said in one year, the program logged over 6,500 hours of volunteer service.

“What I‘ve seen from my students over the last four years has been tremendous,” McCants said. “The students have shown a high level of maturity and poise with the way they conduct themselves in high visibility environments. I am proud of them and I am thrilled that their hard work is recognizable throughout the city.”

The Marine Corps JROTC formed at Pasadena High School in 1971 and for more than 40 years, they have been volunteering for their school and the City of Pasadena. Each year, the JROTC volunteers at the following special citywide events: Kidfish, Kites and Fishing, Easter, Eggstravaganza, the annual July 4th Festival, Monster Mash and the Christmas Tree Lighting.

“This is a great occasion to honor the students of Pasadena High School for their outstanding contributions, countless hours of volunteering and selfless dedication to the City of Pasadena,” Isbell said.
