One of Cyndi Lauper’s classic hit songs taught music fans around the world that “girls just want to have fun,” but KPRC TV’s Jennifer Reyna told a packed room full of eighth grade girls from each intermediate campus that they are much more than that.

“It was a pleasure being here in Pasadena talking to hundreds of girls to inspire them and give them the guidance that they need to move forward from eighth grade and into high school and for a successful future,” Reyna said.

Reyna was one of the motivational keynote speakers at the Pasadena ISD First Annual Road to Success “Señorita” Conference on Tuesday, May 21.

She was also joined by several local attorneys including Gracie Saenz, Leslie Garcia Ashby, Cynthia Pina, the 2010 Nuestra Belleza Univision Finalist, Judy Wheeler, who delivered a touching message about overcoming a crisis and Andrea Savala, who talked about how relationships influence one’s future. Entertainment was provided by the Brake Free Community Center.

Hosted by Pasadena ISD’s Special Programs Department, the goal of the conference was to empower students to take advantage of their education, find something they are passionate about, work hard to succeed and learn how to overcome obstacles.

“I want to encourage these ladies to be patient, follow your dreams – whatever that may be and do not let people dictate to you that you cannot do it,” said Ashby of Ashby, LLC.

Eunice Gasasin, an eighth grader at Thompson Intermediate, said she aspires to be a registered nurse one day and that Reyna’s message gives her hope that she can achieve her life-long dream.

“My favorite presenter was Ms. Reyna because she made us laugh and she has taught me to never give up,” Gasasin said. “She’s an inspiration because I rarely see people make it as far as she has.”

This event was presented by Larry Savala and his family, along with the President Hispanic Family Initiative and sponsored by the Acapulco Ballroom, ABC Dental, Shared Resources Credit Union, Bravo Ranch and Mi Tienda.
