9702The South Houston High School Alumni Association has announced its first general fund-raising drive -- a month-long, on-line donation initiative called “I’M4SOHO.”

The drive began this week and will continue through the month of February. Those wishing to make donations are urged to go to the association’s new “GoFundMe” page and contribute to the cause.

The Alumni Association “is dedicated to raising funds for the benefit of the school, its current students and for alumni projects,” organization vice president Jamie Hugo Ashby said. “It is our desire to promote and advance educational programs at SHHS, as well as to provide for items which may not be budgeted, but are needed to enhance the environment and atmosphere at the school.”

The donation drive was approved by the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors last year with February 2014 chosen as the donation window. Donations are being accepted now. The drive will end on Feb. 28.

Alumni Association directors hope to raise $5,000 during the drive. Donations will go into the association’s operating fund and be used for school grants and alumni activities, such as homecoming festivities.

No donation levels are applied. Alumni and other donors may make large or small contributions. Directors are hopeful that hundreds of small contributions will ensure the success of the drive.

The “I’M4SOHO” fund is being managed by board of directors member Bob Fay, a member of the Class of 1959, South Houston’s first graduating class. While at South Houston, Fay served as the school’s first “Hector” mascot.

The Alumni Association was launched nearly two years ago with the goal of reviving school and alumni traditions. Since then, various fund-raiser projects have led to the primary funding of a customized trailer to be used by the South Houston High band.

The trailer was recently purchased and is now in the process of being refurbished on the inside and redecorated.

The Alumni Association has also made significant contributions to South Houston’s Hall of Honor initiative. The group has facilitated nominations from graduates for Hall of Honor alumni and teachers inductees. The school’s teacher Hall of Honor was unveiled last October during homecoming week.

Those making donations will be acknowledged on the “I’M4SOHO” website, if they so choose.

Those wishing to make an off-line donation may send a check to Alumni Association treasurer Coe Ann McBee at 10702, Nicoles Place Trail, Houston, 77089. Checks should be made payable to the South Houston HS Alumni Association.

Website donations may be made with a credit card only.
